Solana’s BLS Key Registration Is Live—But the Validator Gate Is Still Pending

Solana has activated on-chain BLS public-key registration for validators on mainnet. This is not the Alpenglow consensus upgrade itself. It is preparatory infrastructure: Alpenglow’s planned Votor design relies on BLS aggregate signatures so many validator votes can be represented by a compact certificate rather than verified one by one.

For operators, the immediate task is clear. The Solana Foundation says registration requires Solana CLI 4.1.0 or later and associates a BLS key with a vote account through a new authorization path. The registration includes a proof of possession, intended to bind the BLS key to that vote account and prevent rogue-key registration in aggregate-signature verification.

The important caveat is that the Validator Admission Ticket (VAT) gate is still pending on mainnet, even though BLS registration is live. When VAT does activate, validators without a registered BLS key will be excluded from the admitted set and stop participating in consensus; the initial design also limits admission to the 2,000 highest-staked validators. That makes this a real readiness milestone, not a switch to a new consensus protocol.

Another caveat matters for planning: VAT activation does not itself enable Alpenglow. The Foundation describes Alpenglow as a separate Agave 4.3 migration, with an expected October 2026 arrival, while the underlying Alpenglow improvement proposal is still marked Review. After the full migration, the proposal describes off-chain votes and a 1.6 SOL per-epoch VAT, burned from admitted validators’ vote accounts. Those parameters and timelines should therefore be treated as current design and implementation targets, not completed mainnet behavior.

For developers, the practical lesson is restraint. Do not market Alpenglow finality or altered validator economics as live today. For validator operators, BLS registration is the actionable change now; VAT and the consensus replacement remain separate pending steps.
